THE STORY

Amateur ornithologist FRANKIE HAWKINS chases after multiple species of birds in pursuit of the answer to the age-old question that's plagued her for years: What is the deal with birds? After hours of scouring the forest, Frankie is on the brink of giving up when a bird unlike she’s ever seen appears and sets her off on a journey that leads Frankie to the biggest discovery of her life!

LOGLINE

A trailblazing young birder sets out to answer the age-old question – what’s the deal with birds? When a strange bird offers her answers, things begin to take flight.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I was drawn to the article WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH BIRDS because of its brazen hilarity: Daniel Baldassarre wrote it to satirize online scientific sources publishing research without checking data. I found the article tremendously absurd, and felt it aligned with how I feel about entertainment. As someone who has worked in the industry for years, our art is often reduced to a quick and easy version, instead of pushing to see what film is capable of and how it can touch an audience.

The story of Frankie, an amateur ornithologist, alone in a world filled with academics, is something with which every person can relate. The tone of our film is light and fun, but with a very heartfelt ending: an escape from not fitting in, a flock to join. We shot it on film to capture the beauty of nature on celluloid, and it looks incredible. The greens are beyond gooey green, and the yellow and red plumage of our animated Bowerbird pop in the best way.

I once read that while you can’t reach people through argument, you can with story. Frankie represents the lost child in all of us, the ability to experience joy, find the quiet humor in life, and to look at things with a beginner's eye. These are all things easily forgotten in our modern era. BIRDS is the perfect example of this kind of harmony, and hopefully a breath of fresh air to any audience.
